AI Startup Funding Hits Record $120 Billion in First Half of 2026

Global venture capital investment in AI startups reached $120 billion in the first half of 2026, surpassing the full-year total for 2025 as investors bet heavily on vertical AI applications.

Venture capital firms poured a record $120 billion into AI startups during the first six months of 2026, according to data from PitchBook and CB Insights. The figure exceeds the total AI funding for all of 2025, signaling sustained investor confidence in the sector.

Unlike the broad-based AI investment wave of 2023-2024, current funding is concentrated in vertical applications: healthcare AI, autonomous systems, and enterprise automation dominate the dealflow.

Where the Money Is Going

Healthcare AI led all sectors with $28 billion in funding, driven by breakthroughs in diagnostic imaging, drug discovery, and clinical trial optimization. Enterprise automation followed at $22 billion, with companies building AI agents that can handle complex multi-step business processes.

Robotics and autonomous systems attracted $18 billion, reflecting growing commercialization of warehouse automation, last-mile delivery, and agricultural robots.

The Mega-Round Trend

Funding rounds exceeding $1 billion have become commonplace, with 23 such deals closed in the first half alone. The largest was a $6.5 billion Series D for Cohere, which is building enterprise-focused language models to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.

Despite the record numbers, some investors are beginning to question valuations. Several prominent VCs have publicly warned that not all AI startups will generate returns sufficient to justify their current pricing.
